Updating AWFlow

How AWFlow updates, what the update card on Home tells you before and after an update, and what the update banners mean.

The browser updates the AWFlow extension by itself, usually within a day of a release. AWFlow 0.9 tells you, before and after, whether an update touches your workflows, and keeps your data safe while it upgrades.

When an update is waiting, or has just been installed, and one of your own workflows uses a step that changes in it, a card appears on Home:

  • AWFlow 0.9 is ready: the new version is downloaded and waits for the browser to apply it. The card says how many of your workflows use a step that changes.
  • Updated to AWFlow 0.9: the update is installed, and some of your workflows use a step that changed.

From the card:

  • Review lists the workflows and, for each, the steps concerned, each with what kind of change it is: Deprecated or Works differently (amber), Update available (blue). Open opens a workflow with those steps ringed on the canvas. Nothing is modified. The same card also shows in the inbox, and Review works from any page.
  • Update now applies the waiting version at once (the app reloads).
  • Release notes opens the release notes of that version.
  • Later hides the card until the next version.

Updating never changes your saved workflows: steps keep their version and workflows their behaviour until you choose to update them.

If AWFlow is too old to talk to your account, a banner says AWFlow needs an update to keep syncing. Your local workflows keep working. The same notice is pinned at the top of the inbox. Cloud saves and syncing stop until you update; everything kept on this device works as usual. Press Update AWFlow, or update the extension from your browser’s extensions page.

An update can change how AWFlow stores your data on this device. Before it changes anything, AWFlow keeps a backup of what it is about to change. If the change can’t be finished:

  • We couldn’t update your saved data. Nothing was lost. Saving is paused until the update works; you can still open and read everything. Use Try again, or Export my data to keep a copy.

If you open your data with an older AWFlow than the one that last saved it (for example after rolling back the extension), a banner says This data was saved by a newer AWFlow. Update AWFlow to edit it. You can open and read everything, but changes and run history aren’t saved until you update.

Rarely, a step can be switched off for everyone while a serious problem is fixed. A workflow that reaches it stops at that step with a plain message, before it does anything. Your workflow is not changed: the step runs again as soon as it is switched back on.

Every call from the app to the AWFlow service carries a short header with the AWFlow version, whether you use the extension or the web app, and the browser name, for example 0.9.0/ext/chrome. It lets the service warn old versions and keep them working. It contains nothing about you or your workflows. See Privacy and your data.
