Readwise / Reader

Save what you highlight to Readwise and full articles to Reader. Two Readwise APIs behind one node, modeled as resources — one account-wide token unlocks both.

  • Readwise (highlights) — save one or many highlights in a single run. This is a batch save: every item that arrives on the node’s input becomes one highlight and they all go up in one request, each carrying its source URL, title, and author when available. Pair it with the page-metadata / selection nodes upstream, or fan a list of quotes into it.
  • Reader (articles) — save a full page/article to your Reader library, optionally with the exact HTML you captured.
ResourceOperations
Readwise (Highlights)Save highlights
Reader (Articles)Save document

On Readwise → Save highlights, the node maps every incoming item to a highlight and sends them all in one POST /v2/highlights/ request. For each item it fills:

FieldSource
text (required)The Highlight text field, else the item’s text / highlight / content / selection
titleThe Title field, else the item’s title
authorThe Author field, else the item’s author / byline
source_urlThe Source URL field, else the item’s source_url / url / link
note, location, highlighted_atThe matching fields, else the item’s values

Leave a field blank to read it per-item from the incoming data; set a field to apply that value to every highlight in the run. Items with no highlight text are skipped.

SettingNotes
CredentialA Readwise access token (see below).
Resource / OperationReadwise (highlights) or Reader (articles), and what to do.
Highlight textThe highlight (Readwise). Leave blank to read it from each incoming item.
Title / Author / Source URLProvenance carried onto each highlight — blank reads from the item.
Note / Location / Highlighted atOptional per-highlight metadata.
URLThe article/page URL to save (Reader → Save document).
HTMLOptional full-page HTML to store the exact content you captured (Reader).
Summary / TagsOptional metadata for the saved document (Reader).
  • Auth (Class A): a single account-wide access token from readwise.io/access_token. The same token works for both Readwise and Reader. Because it is account-wide it grants full access to your Readwise account — keep it secret.
  • It is sent as Authorization: Token <token> (Readwise’s scheme — not Bearer). It’s stored in your credential vault and never passes through awflow’s backend.

This node is extension-only. The Readwise API isn’t confirmed to send browser-CORS headers for token-authenticated requests, so run it in the awflow browser extension. In the web build the node shows the “needs the extension” block instead of running.

  • 401 Unauthorized / “access token was rejected” — the token is missing or wrong; copy a fresh one from readwise.io/access_token.
  • Nothing saved / “No highlight text to save” — either set the Highlight text field, or connect items that carry a text (or highlight / content / selection) field.
  • Highlights missing their source — set Source URL / Title / Author, or make sure the incoming items carry source_url (or url / link), title, and author.
  • 429 Too Many Requests — Readwise throttles bursts; enable retry on the node or wait before retrying.
